Filing the Sharp Edges off Equine Teeth Floating
The argument accepted by the appellate court was that
Brown's activities were akin to routine nonveterinary
services similar to those performed by grooms in applying
liniments, poultices and bandages, and by farriers caring for
foot abscesses and infections, applying shoes and
providing routine maintenance with rasps and paring knives.
By rejecting the state’s appeal, the Appellate Division
upheld a lower court’s ruling that said horse dentistry is a
common practice, similar to blacksmithing, and doesn’t
require certification.......

EQUINE DENTISTS STRIKE BACK

Daily Oklahoman - Monday, March 23, 2009
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Law has an overbite
Regarding "Equine dentist law has teeth” (news story, March 15): People who
don’t have a veterinary license have been working on the teeth of livestock for
years. What makes it a felony now?

How long will it be before the state decides farmers and ranchers like myself
can’t doctor, dehorn or castrate our own cattle and make it a felony if we do?
This law should be repealed.

Bobby Griswold, an Oklahoma Equine Teeth Floater, was
ARRESTED on March 4, 2009

As Bobby Griswold and his family prepare for a legal battle, they recognize the overwhelming
emotional support that has helped them over the past week.

On March 4, Griswold was the first person arrested in Oklahoma under a new and absurd
change to a state law.  The veteran horse teeth floater was taken into custody for allegedly
practicing veterinary medicine without a license, even though veterinarians receive no
training in floating at veterinary colleges.

Griswold, who has made a national name for himself as one of the elite saddle bronc riders in
the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is out of jail on bond and is preparing to
vigorously defend himself.

The married father of three girls is focusing his attention on the legal situation before him.

"My family and I have received unbelievable support through this situation, and it all means
so much," said Griswold, 40, who finished the 2008 rodeo season at the National Finals
Rodeo in December. "We can't thank all of you enough for the support everyone has given
us. We are truly blessed."

An account has been established to help the Griswold family cover the costs that will be
associated with this legal battle.

Because Bob’s fight has implications for horse owners and horse teeth floaters across the
country, we ask that you kindly consider mailing a contribution of whatever amount to:
Tulsa/Broken Arrow Veterinarian, G.F. Anderson
Opposes Teeth Floaters.  Dr Anderson stated "equine
dentistry should remain left to licensed vets".

OKLAHOMA CHIROPRACTOR FINED $75,000.00
for ADJUSTING HORSES FREE OF CHARGE
On Tuesday, August 11th, an Oklahoma board certified human chiropractor from the McAlester, OK area was fined $75,000.00 for working on
horses.  He occasionally adjusted horses and dogs (free of charge) for some of his friends and clients, but apparently that is against the law,
along with teeth floating, aroma therapy, massage therapy and more.   A fine that steep is literally unheard of and we have no reason to believe
that any of his/her fellow human chiropractors are pushing this issue.  Why would they care if he or she worked on a horse?  According to
Oklahoma law (vet practice act), you could go to downtown OKC and hire a homeless person to come work at your farm.  As long as that person
is your "regular employee" he can float teeth, do massages, provide aromatherapy and whatever else you tell him to do (no training
required)...but it is ILLEGAL for you to hire a skilled, competent layperson to do any of those things for you!

We are lobbying to change the Oklahoma Veterinary Practice Act for reasons like this.   There are a handful of Oklahoma veterinarians who are
greedy and selfish and continue to fight against us tooth and nail.   There simply aren't enough vets in this state to handle the workload, yet
some are fighting to keep any and every layperson from providing services for animals.  This concept is archaic and ridiculous.  There are many
highly skilled individuals who are perfectly capable of providing non-invasive, non-medical services for animals and they should be allowed to
work, just as they are in the human medical field.   Furthermore, it should be YOUR CHOICE, no one else's.
If I think you are good enough to
adjust my back and I ask you to adjust my horse, thats MY CHOICE!!!!!
Another equine dentist has been arrested. He's not from Oklahoma but we are going to try to help him by bringing more awareness to his
situation.  There will be a roping fundraiser in Mineral Wells, TX on Oct 10th for those of you who can make it.  This is unbelievable. Here's what
happened (in his own words):

"Yesterday morning on my way to an appointment I was arrested in Castle Dale Utah on a warrant out of Nevada. I am being charged with eight
felony counts of practicing veterinary medicine without a license. It was a $24,000 cash only bond, but thank God my attorney in Las Vegas got
them to release me on my own recognizance. I am scheduled for an arraignment on the charges for August 31, 8:00 AM Monday morning. Along
with the Nevada charges, I have charges in two counties in Utah. The charge is fifteen counts of unlawful professional conduct. I'm hoping to
have those two settled in the next month or two. The state is finally willing to talk about a plea deal that might be acceptable.

My attorney fees are now in excess of $11,000. I've been trying to do it myself but my wife and friends say that people need to know in case
anyone can help us.

Thank God Josh and Randy at Texas Institute of Equine Dentistry are having the First Annual Ray Donnell Memorial Roping and have decided to
use it for a fund raiser to help me and my family with our expenses fighting these charges. The roping will be held on October 10, 2009, in Mineral
Wells, Texas at an arena close to the school. Josh is still working out the details. I am very honored and excited about this roping.

The sad thing about my whole mess is that it is only about two veterinarians in Utah that started the whole mess. The one went so far as to call
veterinarians in Nevada when he heard I was doing work down there and spread a lot of lies about me. He even told them that I had killed horses.
His lies lead to the Veterinary Board doing an investigation and filing the charges against me. It is so frustrating when a few greedy, power
hungry veterinarians can hurt so many good people. We have to stop them. I thank you for your web site and your support. I can't say thank you
enough."   Mark Allen

If any of you are interested in helping Mark out,
checks should be made out to Mark Allen and can be sent to The Coalition for Oklahoma Teeth
Floaters, PO Box 135, Washington, OK  73093.  We will forward them to Mark and his family.   Don't forget the roping fundraiser in Mineral Wells
October 10th!!!!
This nonsense must stop now!  Horse owners EVERYWHERE need to speak up!  Contact your State Representatives!  The Equine
Dentists can't do it alone.  Please stand up and fight for your rights as horse owners. There is strength in numbers...and horse owners far
outweigh the vets who are fighting to keep laypersons from
providing services to animals.  MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!!!!!
